Sustainability & Artisan Community
Commitment to sustainability and animal welfare
At Inverna, we firmly maintain our position in favor of sustainability and against any type of animal cruelty. We value the integrity of every living being and are dedicated to ensuring that each product reflects our respect for nature and animals.
Peru is the main producer of alpaca in the world (87% of the total world population). The breeding of this beautiful emblematic camelid is one of the main agricultural activities that have occurred in the high Andean areas of our Peru since ancient times. However, year after year thousands of alpacas succumb to harsh winters. Temperatures drop to 21 degrees Celsius below zero in areas of Puno, located above 4,000 meters above sea level, and between 6 and 16 degrees below zero in villages located between 3,850 and 4,000 meters above sea level. Snowfall and extreme low temperatures lead to the freezing of the fields, causing the death of the alpacas due to starvation.
These conditions seriously affect the income of local communities, whose main source of livelihood is raising alpacas. The situation is so critical that authorities frequently declare a state of emergency in these Andean regions.
Ethics in production
Contrary to the unethical and impractical practice of slaughtering alpacas for their fur, for farmers, losing an alpaca is a huge economic loss. Alpaca wool, valued almost three times more than skin or leather, constitutes the main source of income for these communities. Since alpacas can live up to 20 years, losing an alpaca means giving up obtaining its wool for that long period.
Inverna addresses this situation by taking advantage of skins and leather that would otherwise be discarded, transforming them into beautiful items such as hats, slippers and handbags made by various communities of alpaca artisans located in Puno, Cusco and Lima - Peru.
Empowering the community of artisans
At Inverna, we have a fundamental objective: to grow together with a community of producers who find in their work a source of sustenance for their homes, providing opportunities to both fathers and mothers who are heads of families.
We strive to provide a safe and equitable workspace for our talented artisans, who dedicate their time and skills to each piece with an unwavering commitment to quality.
We want our customers to feel confident that when purchasing an Inverna piece, they are not only getting a high-quality product, but are also being integrated into a fair value and labor chain.
Artisan tradition and contemporary design
At Inverna, we fuse rich artisan tradition with contemporary designs, going beyond traditional colors to explore more vibrant and eye-catching palettes. This modernization of craftsmanship not only preserves a historic practice, passed down from generation to generation, but also infuses vitality and originality into each creation.
Throughout our journey, we have collaborated closely with communities in various regions, such as Puno - Isla Amantaní, Juliaca, Cusco - Sicuani, Canchis, Lima - Cieneguilla, Huaycan. In each community, we have received valuable ancestral knowledge about leather treatment, which has allowed us to perfect ourselves over time, so that our products are extremely soft and comfortable.
