While synthetic leather has advantages in terms of animal ethics, it also has considerable negative effects. In this article we will show some aspects to take into account about synthetic leather.
Synthetic leather and its environmental challenges: what is not seen
We understand that many consumers prefer synthetic or sometimes misnamed “vegan” fur, in an effort to avoid animal abuse. However, it is essential to recognize the negative impacts on the environment associated with the production of these substitute materials. Studies have shown that the manufacture of synthetic hair contributes to greenhouse emissions and generates non-biodegradable waste.
An important study that addresses polluting materials in synthetic leather manufacturing is “Environmental Hazards of Leather Industry and Technologies to Combat its Pollution” published in the scientific journal “Journal of Cleaner Production” in 2018. This study reviews the main materials and processes contaminants associated with the manufacture of synthetic leather.
Among the contaminating materials identified in the study were chemicals used in the manufacturing process, such as volatile organic solvents, heavy metals (such as chromium), persistent organic compounds, and toxic chemicals used in finishing and the preparation of synthetic leather.
The study also examines greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants associated with synthetic leather production, as well as solid and liquid waste generated during the manufacturing process.
Regarding the sources of pollution, the study highlights the environmental impacts of synthetic leather factories, including air, water and soil pollution, as well as risks to human health and biodiversity.
Beyond the controversy
At Inverna, we are proud to present our products made from 100% alpaca leather, sourced ethically and responsibly. The alpacas that provide this valuable resource have not been mistreated; Unfortunately, they have lost their lives due to inclement weather, such as starvation caused by annual snowfall. We take advantage of this resource in an ethical and responsible manner, a practice that we have called “ethical fur”.
Alpaca leather offers exceptional durability, unlike synthetic leather which tends to wear easily over time. This durability contributes to a longer lifespan and ultimately reduced waste. To support our choice, we highlight initiatives such as the Peruvian Life Cycle and Industrial Ecology Network (PELCAN). This research group is dedicated to demonstrating the sustainability of alpaca compared to other fibers, identifying environmental impacts and developing mitigation plans, as well as creating a value chain for alpaca fiber.
In a world where less than 1% of textiles are recycled and fast fashion contributes to waste by throwing away clothes at the end of each season, at Inverna we believe in transparency and informed decision making.
We are proud to affirm that in the production of our products, the environment is not contaminated at any time. Additionally, we are firmly committed to ensuring that no animals suffer during the manufacturing process of our garments. Our philosophy is based on respect for all living beings, and we ensure that our practices are ethical and cruelty-free at all times.
Likewise, all our garments are designed to last over time. We promote slow fashion, focusing on durability and quality instead of following the fast pace of the fashion industry. We believe in the importance of purchasing garments that last over time, instead of following ephemeral trends.
